Recyda Joins Forces with SAP to Tackle Complex PPWR Recyclability Reporting Challenges for Global Brands

03.11.2025

Freiburg, 03.11.2025 – Recyda joins forces with SAP. The collaboration integrates the specialised assessment capabilities of Recyda, a renowned provider of packaging sustainability software, directly into SAP® Responsible Design and Production. This addresses the critical regulatory challenges businesses face in preparing for the European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

The PPWR introduces stringent new requirements for companies placing packaged goods on the EU market. A core component of the regulation is the mandatory assessment of packaging recyclability, which directly influences Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees through a system known as eco-modulation. Companies with more recyclable packaging will pay lower fees, while those with hard-to-recycle materials will face financial penalties. This eco-modulation pressure is not a distant future concept; this financial incentive systems are already active in key European countries today, creating immediate pressure on producers to optimise their packaging.

While businesses recognise the impending PPWR requirements, many underestimate the operational complexity involved. The primary challenge lies in managing the vast amount of specific packaging data required for accurate assessment across a fragmented regulatory landscape. Even as the PPWR aims to harmonise this landscape, the underlying complexity and critical need for accurate, granular assessment will remain.

"The PPWR turns recyclability from a sustainability goal into an urgent financial and compliance requirement. Companies need to assess their packaging performance today," said Christian Knobloch, CEO at Recyda. "What many businesses underestimate is the depth of the data required. It’s far more than a simple checklist, especially since teams must manage different rules for every market they sell in. This level of complexity quickly overwhelms internal resources relying on manual spreadsheets."

For global companies to thrive, sustainability data must move from siloed spreadsheets into core business processes. With this partnership, we are enriching SAP® Responsible Design and Production with highly specialised, up-to-date international recyclability rules. This collaboration empowers brands to make proactive design choices and confidently navigate the complex regulatory landscape.

Key Benefits of Integration Include:

  • Simplified Compliance: Streamlines the complex process of assessing packaging recyclability against varying and deep national rules across the EU.

  • Eco-Modulation Optimisation: Provides accurate data to help companies forecast and reduce EPR fees by improving packaging design based on precise regulatory feedback.

  • Integrated Data Integrity: Eliminates data silos by feeding precise recyclability metrics directly into existing SAP workflows for product development, procurement, and sustainability reporting.

The New Integration in Action

To help businesses navigate these changes, Recyda and SAP will be hosting an expert workshop at the Sustainable Packaging Summit in Utrecht, titled "Solving the PPWR Data Challenge: An Integrated Approach from SAP and Recyda". Come speak to us and find out about PPWR compliance!
